さす【差す･射す】

1 〔光が〕 shine; come out; 〔影が〕 fall 《on…》; 〔色が〕 be tinged 《with…》.

●日のささない部屋 a room where the sun never shines (in) [that never gets the sun].

●西日がさしていた. The evening sun was shining.

・雲が切れて日がさしてきた. The sun shone [came out] through a gap in the clouds.

・冬の日は部屋の奥までさす. In winter, the sun shines right to [sunlight reaches] the back of the room.

・彼女の頬に赤みがさしてきた. Her cheeks were tinged with red [flushed].

・心に不安の影がさした. A shadow of uncertainty fell across my mind.

・好景気にかげりがさしてきた. A cloud fell [was cast] over our prosperity.

2 〔注ぎ入れる〕 pour; (注ぎ足す) add; water; 〔着色する〕 color; dye.

●やかんに水を差す put water in a kettle; fill a kettle with water

・話に水を差す ⇒みず

・小皿に醤油(_しょうゆ)を差す pour some soy sauce into a little dish

・蝶番(_{ちょうつがい})に油を差す oil a hinge

・目薬を差す 《米》 put eyedrops [《英》 drop some eye lotion] into one's eye(s)

・唇に紅を差す put on some lipstick.

●彼らは仲良く差しつ差されつしていた. They kept pouring each other drinks. [⇒さしつさされつ]

・彼女はほおに一はけ紅を差した. She brushed [dabbed] a little rouge [blush] on her cheeks.

3 〔満潮になる〕 rise; be in [high tide]; 〔流れ込む〕 flow in.

●潮が差している. The tide is in. | It's high tide.

・床上に水が差してきた. Water has covered the floor.

4 〔きざす〕 appear; threaten; come over one; raise 《its》 ugly head.

●急に眠気が差してきた. I suddenly felt [came over] sleepy. | Drowsiness suddenly came over me.

・この仕事にはつくづく嫌けが差した. This work is getting less and less pleasant. | I am getting fed up with this job.

・それを実行するのはちょっと気が差す. I'm not so sure about putting that into practice.

・彼がそんなことをしたのは魔が差したためと言えるだろう. You could say he did it because something got into him.

5 〔立てる〕 put up; raise; (穴に) insert; stick.

●かぎ穴にかぎを差す put a key in(to) a keyhole

・傘を差す put up an umbrella

・傘を差して歩く walk under an umbrella.

●手紙は状差しに差してあった. The letter was stuck in a letter rack.

・彼はスーツのえりにバラの花を差していた. He had a rose (stuck) in his lapel.

6 〔帯に差し込む〕 wear 《a sword at one's side》; 〔脇に入れる〕 carry 《a book under one's arm》; 【相撲】 insert 《one's arm under the opponent's arm》.

●腰に刀を差す wear a sword at one's belt

・左を差して一気に寄る 【相撲】 insert one's left arm 《under the opponent's right arm》 and force 《him》 out in the same motion.
